What is FASD?
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a term which describes a broad range of physical and intellectual disabilities, including brain injury. FASD affects people whose mothers drank alcohol during pregnancy. FASD is permanent and cannot be cured.
FASD occurs in all races, religious, cultural backgrounds, countries, economic statuses, and ages. We usually cannot tell just by looking if a person is affected by FASD. No amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy.

FASD Awareness Day Turns 10!

People marched up the street. Bells rang. Signs were hoisted in the air. Municipal Enforcement patrol cars were at the scene. Was it an angry protest? No, it was a celebration!
September 9, 2009 marked the 10th Anniversary of FASD Awareness Day. Recognized around the world, FASD Awareness Day is observed and celebrated each year to raise awareness of how to support those who are affected by FASD, and how communities can take action to prevent FASD.
AT 9:09 AM, Holy Trinity Anglican Church rang their bells, as part of an international bell concordance to mark the day. Yellowknife citizens came out to participate in an Awareness Walk and BreakFASD, to visit an information booth, and to snag free hotdogs and cake. Citizens throughout the NWT were also able to read newspaper inserts, chock full of information on FASD, a few days before September 9.
A lot of hard work went into FASD Awareness Day, and it could not have happened without all of the volunteers, donations, and last minute assistance of many people. Thanks to MLA Bob Bromley, the City of Yellowknife and Councillor Shelagh Montgomery, the Salvation Army, Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program, Sodexo Inc., Yellowknife Direct Charge Co-op, Extra Foods - YK Centre, Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Centre for Northern Families, Yellowknife Municipal Enforcement Division, YKACL Staff, and everyone who participated. A special thank you to Annie Whane, whose speech inspired many, and earned a standing ovation.
We hope to see you next year, when we do it all over again!
