OPEN DOORS

Got Tasks? We can help.

Skills Training & Community Inclusion, through its OPEN DOORS service, would like to partner with Yellowknife businesses to assist with tasks that would provide real value to your daily operations. We will work with you to identify areas within your daily operations that could benefit from specific duties being completed... on-time and to the standards established by your organization.

What we do

OPEN DOORS offers training and employment opportunities to adults with intellectual disabilities. Utilizing a 'Place & Train' model, the individual is accompanied by a job coach to the work-setting while providing the necessary one-on-one training related to the identified task. The job coach is fully subsidized and acts as the conduit between the employer and their newest staff. The goal of the employee is to reach occupational independence and to complete their tasks to the standard required by the operations. Once obtained, the job coach will transition off the work-site, but will remain a dedicated link between employer and their new staff. In some instances, the employee will require on-going support and training therefore the job coach will remain on-site indefinitely.

Who pays the employee? What about liability?

The new employee (while in-training) will be contracted through the Association for Community Living. Wages and benefits will be either fully or partially subsidized by the Association including workplace liability costs - up until they are able to perform the tasks to the employer's standard. Once this occurs, the employer will transition them to their payroll and applicable plans - just like any of their other fully functioning staff.

Why should employers care?

Successful businesses tend to seize opportunities which provide a distinct competitive advantage. Unlocking the talent within individuals with intellectual disabilities shows leadership and a deep sense of community. Yes, community inclusion is the Association's goal, but organizations who adopt this perspective will begin to realize tangible benefits.

OPEN DOORS, an employment service for persons with intellectual disabilities, is wholly funded by the Government of Canada, through the GNWT - Department of Education, Culture, and Employment.
