What is FASD?
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a term which describes a broad range of physical and intellectual disabilities, including brain injury. FASD affects people whose mothers drank alcohol during pregnancy. FASD is permanent and cannot be cured.

FASD occurs in all races, religious, cultural backgrounds, countries, economic statuses, and ages. We usually cannot tell just by looking if a person is affected by FASD. No amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy.

FASD Awareness Day 2011!

Once again, we celebrated our annual FASD Awareness Day on September 9, 2011. The day's celebrations began with the 8th Annual FASD Awareness Walk starting from the Centre for Northern Families to the Salvation Army. Despite the rainy weather, approximately 50 walkers, led by MLA Frame Lake, Wendy Bisaro and YKACL President, Pam Weeks-Beaton, walked down Franklin Avenue ringing bells and carrying placards with messages for the prevention of prenatal alcohol exposure. At 9:09 am the Holy Trinity Anglican Church rang the community bell of reflection to acknowledge that FASD can be prevented.
The Walk was followed by the BreakFASD at the Salvation Army and the participants enjoyed a wonderful meal of pancakes, sausages and fruit. Regional CPNP Nutrition Program donated a fruit tray for our BreakFASD. Lynn Elkin, YKACL Executive Director, welcomed everyone and the Salvation Army's Dale Sobool provided a blessing prior to the BreakFASD. The BreakFASD guest speakers included: City Councillor Amanda Mallon, who read the City of Yellowknife's Proclamation that September 9, is FASD Awareness Day, Simone Fournel, Director of Child and Family Services Division who spoke on behalf of GNWT Health and Social Services and special guest speaker, Julie Beckwith. Julie's speech was inspiring and heart warming. Other notable attendees of the day included Wendy Bisaro, MLA Frame Lake and Glen Abernethy, MLA Great Slave. Media attendance was excellent with CBC and APTN radio and television. We had a display booth in the Centre Square Mall with information, resources, giveaways, prizes, cake, and hot chocolate. Thank you to everyone who volunteered and participated.
We look forward to seeing you again on September 9, 2012 for our annual FASD Awareness Day Events.
